STAFF at a newly opened fast food store are happy making a song and dance about a customer’s order.

The curtain has been raised on Leon’s new London branch – with a dramatic twist to suit its West End surroundings with staff performing to their customers.

Among the budding stars singing for somebody else’s supper are Peacehaven composer Alexandra Cella, Bimm Brighton graduate Nate Cambridge and actor and singer Laura Frances, from Brighton.

The trio were selected as part of a 40-strong team of drama and musical theatre students and colleagues with no formal training at the new Shaftesbury Avenue restaurant.

An all-star cast of judges – Helen George from Call The Midwife, comedian turned singer Alexander Armstrong, Anna Shaffer from Harry Potter and Bucks Fizz’s Jay Aston – whittled down the team from a selection of applicants from all over the UK.

Customers are being told to expect a live track every two to three songs while staff switch from taking orders to moving around the restaurant, performing live.

It is hoped the job could be the first step towards a life on the West End stage just a few doors down.

The new, all-singing restaurant, which opened last week, has a deep red carpet leading guests to the counter, a lift redesigned as a Royal Box and with posters in tribute to classic musicals.

Alexandra Cella, 26, has worked in New York and London and also ran a singing yoga class in Peacehaven.

She said: “To be able to have a regular platform to use my voice and sing out is invaluable and, combined with encouraging a healthy lifestyle, it really is the perfect part-time job.”

Laura Frances performed in her first show at the age of six and trained in musical theatre at the London College of Music before travelling the world as a lead vocalist

on a six-star luxury cruise line.

Nate Cambridge studied Musical Theatre at The Brit School and went on to get a degree in professional musicianship at Bimm Brighton. He is currently gigging and recording with his five-piece funk band Uncle Fox.

Leon co-founder John Vincent, who was also on the audition panel, said: “In just six weeks we auditioned, hired and trained a team who can both prepare the full range of Leon’s menu and belt out a show tune or pop classic in between times.

“I’m biased as I’m from a household that loves musicals – but it’s going to be incredible.”
