Reality TV star Lady Colin Campbell has been found guilty of causing a three-car pile-up after pulling out into traffic on a dual carriageway.

Prosecutors said Campbell, 67, made "an error of judgment" by carrying out an unsafe manoeuvre in her Audi A6 estate on the A27 near Worthing, West Sussex, on May 6 last year.

Brighton Magistrates' Court heard, as Campbell pulled out, an Audi A3 hit her car before the A3 was then "catapulted" into a Ford Focus travelling in the opposite east-bound direction.

Magistrates convicted Campbell of driving without due care and attention following a one-day trial.

Chair of the bench Michael Sandeman said the prosecution had proved Campbell's driving "fell below the standard".

The 2015 I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! star, of Castle Goring, Arundel Road, Clapham, near Worthing, sat beside her son Dima as she was convicted.

Campbell was handed a conditional discharge, ordered to pay costs and a victim surcharge totalling £680, and given three penalty points.

As her lawyer Miles Bennett discussed her financial means with magistrates in court, Campbell said: "We shouldn't have this in front of the Press."

Mr Bennett said her finances gave a "misguided view" and her only form of disclosed income was a £64 a week pension.

Prosecutor Paul Edwards said there was no reason for the way Campbell pulled out into the road, and that her driving fell "below the required standard".

Mr Edwards said: "At 4.15pm on May 6 2016, the defendant was driving her vehicle, an Audi A6, near her home at Castle Goring.

"The defendant reached the junction of the A27 and attempted to turn left on to the A27. The prosecution says that the defendant failed to give way and pulled out into the path of an Audi A3."

Alcohol and drug tests of all those involved in the collision proved negative, and only minor injuries were sustained, Mr Edwards added.

He went on: "That manoeuvre was not a safe one. The prosecution says she created the situation."

Campbell, of Castle Goring, Arundel Road, Clapham, near Worthing, had pleaded not guilty to driving without due care and attention.

Audi A3 driver Harry Court told the court how he was travelling home from work when his car was in collision with Campbell's.

He denied suggestions by Campbell's lawyer Miles Bennett that he was driving dangerously fast, saying he was doing just under the speed limit.

And he told magistrates he could do nothing to avoid the collision happening.

Mr Court said: "I tried to go round it and that's all I can remember. I hit the side of the car and that was it.

"I couldn't do anything. I couldn't brake. All I could do was turn my wheel to avoid the car."

Witness Nicholas Ward said he saw the Audi A3 speed by him before the crash, adding: "I thought: 'What a twat'."

"I could see what was going to happen and it did," he went on.

Teacher Tessa Millington said she saw a "flash of blue" before Mr Court's car crashed into hers as she headed towards Brighton, in the opposite direction to him.

Campbell sprang to fame on the 2015 series of I'm A Celebrity ... with her cutting put-downs, but left the show early on medical grounds. Ex-Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison went on to be crowned Queen of the Jungle.

Outside court, Campbell laid the blame for the crash on Mr Court as she undermined the authority of the magistrates.

She said: "Magistrates are not lawyers, they are not really clued up with the law.

"Had this been in the Crown Court, this would have most likely been not guilty."

She added: "Had Mr Court not been going at the speed he was going, none of this would have happened.

"I have made that manoeuvre literally tens of thousands of times in my life, not at that exact place, but hundreds if not thousands of times without a problem."
