BRIGHTON and Hove City Council has voted through its own budget at the second attempt following a stop-start seven hour meeting.

Green and Conservative councillors voted against a 4.99 per cent council tax and £21 million cuts at Hove Town Hall at the first attempt.

A second vote 45 minutes later following a new amendment saw the budget passed and averted the prospect of a second vote next week.

A revised amendment finding £80,000 of funding for Communities and Third Sector Development Commission from a different source led to the agreement.

Councillors had come together to draw up a joint amendment to avert the majority of youth services cuts.

A joint amendment by all three parties drawn up less than three hours earlier partially reduced cuts to youth services, Early Help and community safety teams.

Youth service protesters had interrupted the meeting with a mass leaflet drop midway through.
