A COLLEGE wants to construct a new, temporary classroom to cope with a higher number of science students.

BHASVIC in Dyke Road, Hove, has applied for temporary, five year permission for an existing single storey temporary classroom and permission for a new, single storey modular building for the same length of time.

The current classroom was given temporary permission in 2012 but a bid to make it permanent was refused last year.

Council officers said making the temporary classroom permanent would create an inappropriate and incongruous feature that would fail to relate to the layout of the historic main buildings.

The college said the facility, which would create 400 square metres of new teaching space, would provide “an accessible, high quality classroom facility for the college and community”.

The new temporary building will have two laboratories and preparation room, required for the increased numbers of students opting to choose science subjects.

The college said the extension, close to its entrance in Old Shoreham Road, will have minimal impact on the local community and students.

A decision is expected in April.
