BAFTA performer and BBC Young Musician of the Year Sheku Kanneh-Mason dropped in to give a master class to a group of young schoolchildren this week.

The prodigiously talented 17-year-old cellist, who wowed millions at the televised London award ceremony last week with his rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, took time out from his hectic schedule to do a workshop with Brighton College pupils before going on to perform with his talented siblings Isata and Braimah at the Eastern Road school’s new Sarah Abraham Recital Hall.

Sheku and his family’s musical journey is utterly compelling. He and his six siblings are all musically gifted, despite having non-musical parents.

Hailing from Nottingham, the eldest Kanneh-Mason sibling, Isata, is already at the Royal Academy of Music and was a Young Musician finalist while second eldest, Braimah, will attend the prestigious school from September. Sheku came to prominence after winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year last May.

The next two siblings, Konya and Jeneba, are gifted pianists and violinists. The next child, Aminata, is only ten but is already at Grade 8 in both violin and piano. Even the baby of the family, at 6, has just started playing the violin.

Readers may recognise this gifted family from their appearance on Britain’s Got Talent in 2015, where the oldest six performed for Simon Cowell who commented that they might just be the most talented family in the world.

Sheku has recently been signed by Decca Records and has spent his time since winning the BBC award playing to packed concert venues. His concert at the school was an immediate sell-out.

Pupils Jade Harvey, Berniya Hamie, Pippa Box, Riya Hamie, Benedict Wade, Tobias Comberti, Dasha Konovalova, Charlotte Yan, Tony Wong and Yvonne Helmore were all thrilled to perform in their various chamber ensembles for Sheku, Isata and Braimah who gave feedback and offered advice.

Charlotte, 15, said: “It was really cool that they were all siblings - there was so much talent in one family!”

Head of music at Brighton College Tom Wiggall said: “It was a delight and privilege to host the Kanneh-Mason trio at Brighton College. It was difficult to know quite how to introduce this extraordinary trio of performers to the pupils and audience, such is the breadth and depth of their performing activities. In recent years, they have been featured on numerous TV and radio programmes as well as appearances with Elton John and Sheku playing at the recent BAFTAs.

"Sheku was fantastic with our pupils in the masterclass and I hope that, once they have recovered from the excitement of the concert, they will be even more inspired to practise hard and become the musicians they can be.”
