A 17-year-old girl has been seriously injured in a car crash.

The two-car collision happened at around 6.30pm on Thursday at the junction of Saddlescombe Road with Devil's Dyke Road, near Poynings, and involved a blue Renault Clio and a silver Nissan Qashqai.

A 17-year-old girl from Hurstpierpoint, who was a passenger in the Renault, sustained serious leg and pelvic injuries. They are not thought to be life-changing or life-threatening.

She was released by fire-fighters and taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where she has been detained for treatment.

The Renault driver, a 17-year-old boy from Sayers Common, sustained a cut to his forehead.

The Nissan was driven by a 35-year-old woman from Henfield who was unhurt. Her passenger, her six-year-old daughter, sustained bruising.

Saddlescombe Road was closed until almost 1am between the Beggars Lane roundabout and Devil's Dyke Road while the incident was dealt with.

PC Sarah Harman, of the Polegate road policing unit, said: "We would like to thank drivers whose journeys were disrupted by the closure and diversions for their patience and understanding."
