Chris Hughton felt Albion were worthy winners at Rotherham after riding out a testing start.
The Seagulls saw off spirited Rotherham 2-0 with second-half strikes from Anthony Knockaert and the man who later replaced him, Solly March.
They dominated the second period after being given some worrying moments in the first.
Hughton said: “I thought we were worthy winners in the end but we had to fight hard for it. There are no easy games here. It’s quite a difficult pitch as well.
“We needed David Stockdale to make a couple of early saves.
“They are a team fighting and they showed that.
“We had to get through that period and I felt that, if we could, the game would then open up for us. That’s exactly what happened.
“As the game opened, Richie Towell had a very good chance, so did Glenn (Murray), and you want to come away with a score which reflects the performance in the end.
“In that last half an hour we could have added to the scoreline and got more goals.”
