A POPULAR arts centre is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a range of events featuring high-profile performers including Band Aid’s Midge Ure.

Comedian Bridget Christie, spoken word artist John Cooper Clarke and musician Ure are among the famous faces appearing at the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham.

There will also be a series of free workshops and activities taking place throughout April.

Next month marks a decade since the opening of the arts venue, which hosts music, theatre, dance, spoken word, debate and visual art events.

Ropetackle artistic director and trustee Anne Hodgson said: “10 years ago the centre opened with no heating, no audiences and no money. Today, Ropetackle is an award-winning venue attracting audiences from all over the world.”

The centre faced a funding crisis in 2011, prompting questions about its future, but an appeal to the public for donations proved successful.

As such, Hodgson added that the venue’s lifespan to date is a “triumph for all the community”.

“This is reflected in the loyal audience support, the way the community generously responded to the 2011 appeal, and by the numerous volunteers who have worked tirelessly to create a welcoming, safe and secure environment for our audiences.”

Spokesperson Mark Phillips added: “the anniversary is significant because not many people realise Ropetackle is a charity staffed almost entirely by volunteers.”

He cited the venue’s recent project A Band Anyone Can Join, in which local musicians, schools and other groups came together to perform on Shoreham’s Coronation Green, as an example of Ropetackle’s community ethos.

Bestselling author Peter James said the Ropetackle was his “favourite Sussex arts venue”, adding that he was “thrilled how Ropetackle has been taken to heart by so many”.

“I love giving my annual talks here – you get incredible warmth and enthusiasm from the audiences.”

Midge Ure, who made his name in rock bands Thin Lizzy and Ultravox, also spoke fondly of the Ropetackle before his third performance at the venue.

“Playing at Ropetackle is always a delight. Venues like this are the lifeblood of the music industry and it’s vitally important that they remain great places to play.

“Anne and her team always go the extra mile to make sure everyone has a great time.”
