A CHIEF Inspector and a sergeant at Sussex Police are being investigated for allegedly having sex with each other while on duty.

The Argus can reveal misconduct papers have been served by the force on Chief Inspector Rob Leet and Sergeant Sarah Porter.

Chief Insp Leet was in charge of policing for the Lewes and Wealden districts until recently when he was moved to a different role.

This revelation comes just days after another policeman was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Inspector Tony Lumb, who was based in Brighton, has been suspended while the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation continues into allegations he had improper sexual relationships with women in the course of his duties.

Sussex Police has confirmed there is an ongoing investigation into Chief Insp Leet and Sgt Porter.

Its spokesman said: "Sussex Police Professional Standards Department is in the early stages of a gross misconduct investigation following an allegation of on duty sexual activity between two serving officers.

"Neither of the officers have been suspended."

Matt Webb, chairman of the Sussex Police Federation which represents police officers, admitted he was aware of the matter and had spoken with the officers.

But he said: “From what I understand from the investigating officers, the current evidence is now indicating low level misconduct and not as per the original allegation.

“This would mean there may have been minor breaches of the expected standards and these would be dealt with internally by management to address any identified shortfalls."

He confirmed that if they were found guilty the pair would have not have behaved in an appropriate manner.

He added that the serving of misconduct papers was a requirement under law and not ad admission of guilt.

Last week Sussex Police revealed that Eastbourne, Lewes and Wealden policing districts are being merged under one overall commander.

Chief Inspector Emma Brice, who has been district commander for the past two years, will be expanding her role to cover the position formerly held by Chief Insp Leet, who has moved to new duties within the local policing branch.

Mr Webb said he did not believe the move was linked to this latest investigation.

He said that in the light of funding cuts the number of chief inspectors around the county was being reduced.

In December we reported that a Sussex Police officer has been sacked after he was caught selling himself for sexual services while on sick leave.

PC Daniel Moss, 39, based at Hastings, became under formal investigation on December 2 and was immediately suspended from duty.

He was caught advertising himself online as a male prostitute and offered services to perform sexual acts for cash.

A Sussex Police spokesman said this demonstrated a clear conflict in personal and professional interests.

Moss had been on sick leave from September for a stress-related illness.
