TWO people are fighting for their lives after a car crashed into a cafe.
Emergency services were called to High Street, Battle, at 2pm after a car hit a number of pedestrians outside a shop.
Police said two bystanders suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken by air ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
Three other pedestrians and the driver are being treated for minor injuries at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings.
It is not clear why the VW Beetle crashed and it is not thought any other vehicles were involved.
The road was taped off near the Battle Abbey school shop.
An East Sussex Fire and Rescue spokesman said that two engine, from Battle and Hastings, attended along with a specially trained rescue teams from Lewes.
After the casualties were treated firefighters worked to secure the damaged building.
Witnesses are asked to contact 101 quoting operation Wellington.
