A mother seriously injured after a car crashed into her and her family while they were out walking has died in hospital.

The family, including an infant in a pram, were walking along Upper Lake, in Battle, when they were struck by a black Volkswagen Beetle.

The car crashed in to a cafe window, trapping customers inside.

Police and paramedics were called at around 1.55pm on Sunday and found the mother with "potentially life-threatening" injuries and the father with a serious head injury.

Both were taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton.

This afternoon Sussex Police said the 37-year-old mother had died as a result of her injuries.

The children suffered shock and minor injuries, as did the woman driver of the car, who Sussex Police said is being investigated over reports she may have been "under the influence of alcohol" at the time of the crash.

They have been taken for treatment at the Conquest Hospital, in St Leonards-on-Sea, where blood samples were taken from the driver for analysis.

Police have appealed for witnesses.

Sergeant Dan Pitcher, of the Sussex and Surrey road policing team, said: "The road was closed for several hours while this incident was dealt with and thanks are due to other motorists for their patience and understanding.

"We are now keen to talk to anyone who may have seen what happened or noticed the black VW being driven shortly beforehand."
