A PARKING firm said it would “most likely” be issuing tickets after travellers moved on to a bingo hall car park yesterday.

About a dozen caravans arrived at the Gala Bingo site in Freshfield Way in the morning.

The travellers said they planned to have moved off again by last night.

One told The Argus: “We came from the leisure centre up the road and we’ll be moving off tonight.”

The car park has large signs saying non-members will be charged £95 to park, with number plates captured by cameras.

A neighbouring business owner said: “People think it’s unfair because parking is so difficult and expensive and it seems to be one rule for us and another for them.

“While you want to say live and let live unless they cause a problem, there have already been people urinating behind the bins.”

Another resident of nearby Freshfield Road said: “While there’s no real reason to assume they have done anything wrong, parking is always such a contentious issue in Brighton that it gets people’s backs up.

“We pay a lot of money for parking tickets and residents’ permits and get slapped with fines when we don’t so it is irritating to see that the rules dont seem to apply to everyone.”

Chrissie Stevens said on Facebook: “It’s always different rules

“I parked in there last year to use the burger van and got a fine

“I bet they don’t get anything.”

Tara Stephanie Doerr said: “It’s frustrating as I have to park on Freshfield Way for work and pay £5.30 every day.

“I once made a mistake on the app, put Freshfield Road and got a fine straight away.”

The bingo hall doors were locked but staff said the hall was still open to the public.

Parking at the bingo hall is run by private company Highview Parking Ltd.

A spokesman for Highview said: “We will most likely be issuing charges.

“These vehicles must be registered with the DVLA.

“This is a timed car park and once that time has expires, tickets will be issued.”

Brighton and Hove City Council said it was aware of the unauthorised encampment.

A spokesman said: “As this is private land, this is a matter for the landowner to deal with, who we believe will be enforcing a common law eviction at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Gala Bingo had not responded to The Argus at the time of going to press.
