A BOY of nine will be standing out from the crowd as he takes on a cancer charity challenge.

Lennon Silcock is running Race for Life this summer in honour of his grandmother Trisha Stubbings.

It is the second time the youngster from Newhaven has done the 5km race despite it being a women-only event.

However, because he is a child, organisers Cancer Research UK are happy for him to take part.

Mrs Stubbings, who is being treated for cancer, will be cheering her grandson on at the event at Stanmer Park, Brighton on July 1.

Lennon’s mother Beccy Fellingham, 34, is also running and says training has been going well.

She said: “He did it three years ago and raised £3,000, which was amazing.

“He really enjoyed doing his bit to help and so he was determined to do it again.

“His nana has yet to beat cancer and is currently undergoing a medical trial to try and beat it.

“Lennon understands he won’t make as much money as he did last time but he said raising any money will help.

“I am very proud of him and what he wants to do.”

Lennon goes to Denton Community Primary School and walks the two-miles to school walk all the time.

Although he doesn’t do a training run every day, the regular exercise he does has helped build up his fitness.

His mother said he was determined to run the whole route.

As well as his grandmother, Lennon’s father Wayne, his two brothers and two sisters and the rest of his family will be there to support him on the big day.

Lennon was overwhelmed by the support he received when he completed the race for the first time when justgiving and Facebook pages were set up.

He had seen his mother race in a previous year and decided he wanted to do it as well.

The youngster also made cakes and sold them to help raise money.

Thousands of women and girls across Sussex have signed up to take part in Race for Life events around the county, including in Brighton and Worthing.

Cancer Research UK is hoping to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds from the races.

Proceeds will be used to support its work researching the causes of and treatment for cancer.

This includes helping to fund the genome damage and stability centre at the University of Sussex.

This carries out research into the responses of cells to genome damage and their relationship to cancer and other aspects of human disease.
