POLICE were called over concerns about a baby in a pub with her drunk mother on Mother’s Day.

Sussex Police were called to the Marine Tavern, in Broad Street, Brighton, on Sunday evening after fears for the little girl’s safety were raised.

The mother of the girl, who is under a year old, was held in police custody overnight before being given a caution on Monday afternoon.

Onlookers said they had grave concerns for the child after seeing her being looked after by police officers as her mother was taken into custody.

Staff at the pub said they were aware of the incident but did not know the mother’s identity.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “A woman was arrested after concerns were raised for a young child in a pub in Brighton.

“Police attended the pub in Broad Street around 8.30pm on Sunday.

“A 36-year-old woman from Southwick was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a child under seven years old.”

One witness told The Argus: “I saw a policeman holding a pushchair with a rain cover over it – in the pushchair was a toddler.

“I remember thinking how impossibly still the child looked.

“I was worried for the baby. She looked lifeless.

“I really did think the worst. Perhaps the poor thing was in shock?

“It appeared to be quite serious.

“An ambulance pulled up and a police van and police car were also present.”

A Broad Street neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “I saw the police outside the pub but had no idea what had happened.

“It is so upsetting.

“At least someone had the sense to realise that the authorities should be called.

“It’s one thing to have a drink or two but to be unable to look after your baby is no joke.”

A neighbouring business owner said they were “incredibly concerned” to hear about the incident.

He added: “To take a young baby to a pub is one thing, but for her to be so drunk that people called the police is awful.”
