WESTMINSTER terrorist Khalid Masood studied at the University of Sussex, the university has confirmed.

The 52-year-old, who killed four people including PC Keith Palmer during a 82 second rampage outside the Houses of Parliament a week ago today, studied economics with economic history between 1994 and 1997 under his birth name of Adrian Elms.

The university is now helping the Met Police with their enquiries.

It is one of numerous Sussex links the terrorist, who was brought up in Rye, has to the county.

He moved back to Sussex in his 20s where he worked at Aaron Chemicals in Bodium.

He was sentenced to two years in prison for a knife attack on Piers Mott in the car park of the Crown and Thistle pub in Northiam in July 2000 serving his time in both Lewes and Ford prisons.

After leaving jail, he moved to Eastbourne and in 2003 he was in court after a violent attack in the driveway of a nursing home which left a man with violent stab wounds to his face.

Masood was acquitted of the attack.

He spent his last night before the attack in the £59-a-night room in Preston Park Hotel in Brighton.

A University of Sussex spokeswoman said: “Last week, we were saddened to learn of the attack in Westminster.

“Since then, it was brought to our attention that the attacker may have studied at the University and we were working to verify this was the case.

“We are now able to confirm that Adrian Russell Elms studied at the University of Sussex twenty years ago. He undertook a Bachelor of Economics with Economic History from 1994-1997.

“As we are assisting the Metropolitan Police with its enquiries, it would be inappropriate for us to comment any further.”
