A CIVIC leader will swap his ceremonial chain for a bike chain for an energetic fundraiser and is looking for more volunteers to join him.

Brighton and Hove Mayor Pete West is hosting a charity bike ride around the boundary of the UN-designated Sussex biosphere as part of a triple challenge whichincludes an 18-mile walk along the Brighton and Hove Way footpath and a tandem ride between the Eiffel Tower and the i360.

Cllr West, the city’s second Green mayor, caused a minor rumpus last year when he announced a break with the traditional three mayoral charities set-up.

He has chosen 27 charities to support and is hoping that this major event will go a long way to ensure they all benefit from their year of mayoral privileges.

The 50-mile ride starts on Sunday, April 23, from Hove Lawns along the seafront cycle path and the undercliff before taking in Lewes, Ditchling, Hurstpierpoint and Shoreham and returning to Hove.

The route has been designed to skirt the edges of the Downs, avoiding the worst of the hills meaning “most reasonably fit adults” should be able to take part.

Among those already signed up are Rich Denyer-Bewick, a trustee of The Clock Tower Sanctuary supporting homeless young people in the city.

Mr Denyer-Bewick said: “I’m happy to make this effort to raise awareness and some money for this great charity. Young people who experience homelessness are some of the most marginalised and vulnerable people in our community.”

Emily O’Brien and Sarah Davenport, from The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, will raise funds for the Casserole Club, a project matching people who like to cook with others who would benefit from a meal and company.

Sarah said: “This scheme is such a brilliant way for people in the community to connect, especially the older generation with the younger generation. My grandad would have loved something like this and it would be great if Casserole Club could reach more people”

Alex Mackain-Bremner is fundraising manager at Brighton and Hove Impetus, helping people who are lonely or isolated.

He said: “Demand for what we do is increasing all the time so whatever I can raise I know it will help recruit and train volunteers to help people through our projects.”

Cllr West said: “I’m looking forward to riding with all of those who’ve registered to join me to raise money for the 27 charities I support.

“Some of these charities are not well known so it’s also a chance to highlight their great work.”
