A pub was forced to close and cancel Easter Sunday lunch after a fire.

Bookings to celebrate the occasion had to be scrapped after six fire engines were called to the Mark Cross Inn just before midnight on Saturday.

Firefighters spent just under six hours at the scene.

The blaze is believed to have started in the kitchen and spread to the roof.

Around 30 firefighters are believed to have attended and the fire has now been extinguished.

The extent of the damage has not been confirmed but no-one was injured or needed to be rescued, a spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said.

She said an investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out on Tuesday.

The pub, which is off Wadhurst Road in the village near Crowborough, broke the news on Sunday to customers by saying: "Due to a fire last night, unfortunately we will be closed today.

"Thank you for the kind messages and everyone here is all okay and we will update if anything changes.

"Happy Easter to all our followers and keep safe."
