Albion could enjoy their biggest party yet at the Amex – refereed by the man who was there on the stadium’s most toxic and acrimonious night.

James Linington, from Newport on the Isle of Wight, will take charge of tomorrow’s clash with Wigan.

It could be the most joyful occasion the six-year-old venue has ever known as they close in on the Premier League.

Linington was last in charge of the Seagulls when they lost 3-1 at promotion rivals Huddersfield in February.

He sent off Lewis Dunk for a second yellow card having shown restraint when home fans bayed for Bruno to be dismissed early on.

His most recent visit to Falmer was for the 2-0 win over MK Dons in the FA Cup in January.

The Argus:

He was also the man in the middle on that tough night when Albion lost 1-0 to Millwall in December 2014 and struggling boss Sami Hyypia was jeered by his own fans.

It is a thoroughly unpleasant evening, one generally recalled as the most bitter and hostile ever known around the stands of the Amex. It was also Hyypia’s final game in charge at home.

Current boss Chris Hughton was named as his successor later that month and the rest is on its way to becoming glorious history.

Linington refereed Rotherham’s home draw with Birmingham on Saturday and has shown 173 yellows and seven reds in 32 fixtures this term.
