Rafa Benitez has admitted Albion are coping with promotion pressure better than his faltering Newcastle side.
But the Toon boss believes the Seagulls had an advantage due to their near misses of recent seasons.
In an unexpected twist to theories expressed by, most notably, David Wagner at Huddersfield recently, Benitez says those near misses are a help rather than haunting the Seagulls.
Albion have opened a seven-point lead over Newcastle by winning all five matches since the international break.
Newcastle have dropped eight points in their last three outings but should still hold off Huddersfield for promotion.
Benitez said: “Brighton have been in this situation challenging for promotion four times in the last five years.
“Does that make a difference? It is simple.”
Albion can secure the title by winning at Norwich on Friday.
Newcastle then host Preston on Monday and go to Cardiff a week tomorrow before Albion return to action at home to Bristol City.
