An elderly cyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries following a collision with a car.

The accident happened shortly after 7.30am today at the junction of Teville Road and South Farm Road in Worthing.

An air ambulance was called to the scene but the cyclist was eventually taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton by road.

The driver of the Ford Fusion car was uninjured.

The area, which is near the level crossing by Worthing Station was closed for more than three hours while Sussex Police investigated the incident.

Witnesses including Mick and Sean Symes ran to help the cyclist and called 999 for help.

Staff from the nearby Tesco store also helped looked after the man and deal with traffic until police and ambulance crews arrived.

Sean Symes, who works at Mikes Bikes in Tarring Road, said: "The cyclist was going over the roundabout when the accident happened.

"I think he was in his 60s or 70s.

"He was lucky there were people nearby as we called for help within seconds and saved a lot of time.

"I just hope he will be okay."

Police are also appealing for help in finding out who the man is, as he is believed to have not had any identification on him.

Anyone able to help is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101, quoting Operation Portsmouth.
