GREAT British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood has pledged his support to a 94-year-old woman who had £600 of her pension money stolen while she was shopping.

The celebrity baker offered to make a donation to help repay the money taken from Daisy Payne in The Broadway, Whitehawk Road, Brighton, on April 6.

The 51-year-old, who lives in Kent, was apparently enraged when he heard of her plight which had been exclusively reported by The Argus last week leading to coverage by other media.

He contacted shop owner Hayley Hobdell who launched the collection to show Mrs Payne the community was supporting her.

She said: “He told me he was really angry when he heard what happened to Daisy and wanted to help.

“I couldn’t not believe it when I heard him on the phone. His voice is very distinct.

“He has been ever so kind and we are so grateful. He said the cheque is in the post.

“I wasn’t completely sure if it was a hoax at first but then I heard his personal assistant had also been in touch with the BBC about it and I have been corresponding directly with him as well. In my heart of hearts I think it is genuine.”

His pledge will be in addition to nearly £1,000 raised in the last five days by friends, neighbours and readers, including one donor who sent a cheque for £300.

Mrs Hobdell, 40, who runs Pack of Cards gift shop in The Broadway, said: “We are so pleased that so many people have come out to support her. It is a very touching case of community spirit which is alive and well in wonderful Whitehawk.”

Mrs Payne said: “I’m so grateful and touched, people have been so kind.

“I didn’t expect all of this and I’m so surprised now to hear a celebrity is also wanting to help me.

“I feel like I am becoming a bit famous myself.

“I hope the person who stole from me reads this, I would like to give them a piece of my mind.”

The money will mean she can at last pay back money she borrowed to pay for a new cooker, heater and toaster which had all broken at once. The extra will be used to pay for a new carpet in her home in Manor Gardens.

Police are investigating the theft and are appealing for any witnesses to contact them on 101 quoting 1210 of 06/04.

It comes as traders raised concerns that crime was “rife” in the area.

Police confirmed there had been a rise on the number of reports in the area and they believe there is one culprit, who is being investigated.

No-one has been arrested yet.
