A LAUNCH event for an eclectic archive of photographs published in The Argus between 1929 and 1992 will help raise money for local charities.

The Argus has been assisted by archivists at The Keep and Andy Garth and his team at Brighton and Hove Stuff to piece together the historic collection.

The Grand in King’s Road, Brighton will be hosting the launch tomorrow to unveil thousands of images at The Argus Photo Archive 1929-1992 Sale and Exhibition.

The event coincides with the launch of the hotel’s Grand Discovery Plaque, which encourages guests to unlock the unique tales of The Grand from the past right up to present day.

Guests can simply scan or tap barcodes located on each plaque at the venue using their smartphones to unearth a myriad of stories relating to the hotel.

Andrew Mosley, general manager at The Grand, said: “We are very excited to be sponsoring this event and hope to raise a considerable amount of money for local children’s charity Rockinghorse and The Argus Appeal.

“The event is a fantastic opportunity for the public to discover more about the history of their city as well as our hotel.

“We are using the tags for visitors to scan so that they can get historic information and stories about the hotel sent straight to their mobile phone as they walk around the exhibition.

“So many photographs have been taken at The Grand over the years of important historic events such as the IRA bombing in October 1984.

“We are aiming to use this event to connect with our customers in a unique and quirky way.”

Historical items relating to The Argus over its 137 years of providing news and views will also be on show and visitors can log on to computers and search for events, places and people and purchase images.

A group from The Keep, Kevin Newman from All Inclusive History, Brighton Auctions and Paul Green who presents The Argus Archive Talks will be there to share their expertise.

The Grand has donated a room to be used for the event and will also be offering a selection of cocktails inspired by the archive.

To celebrate The Grand is recommending that visitors buy its aromatic and whiskey based drink, 1864, named after the hotel’s architect John Whichcord Jr.

Doors open to the public at the event from 2.30pm to 5pm.
