POLICE have renewed an appeal for witnesses to an accident which has left a man critically ill in hospital.

The 71-year-old was cycling in Teville Road, Worthing when he was involved in a collision with a car.

Police are asking for the driver of an estate car seen in the area at the time of the accident to get in touch.

The cyclist is still being treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for a serious head injury.

Sergeant Richard Hornsey of the Sussex Police serious collision investigation unit, said: “We are appealing for the driver of a light-coloured estate car that was travelling west on Teville Road and turned right at the roundabout into South Farm Road towards the level crossing to contact us.

“We believe this person may have important information in this case.”

The accident happened at about 7.30am on Saturday and the road was closed for three hours while emergency services dealt with the scene.

Witnesses told The Argus how they called 999 after the accident and helped look after the cyclist until paramedics arrived.

They also put cones out in the road to stop traffic while waiting for police.

Anyone with information about the incident or who may know the car driver, can email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call Sussex Police on 101, quoting Operation Portsmouth.
