OUR fair city has played host to some veritable superstars over the years.

This selection of photographs from the newly opened Argus archive, covering the 1970s and 1980, shows singing sensations from Boy George to Grease star Olivia Newton John.

It also showcases classic shots of lesser known artists including Police band member Andy Summers, and Edmundo Ros, who younger readers may not recognise.

Ros, pictured here in 1971, who died in 2011 at the age of 100, was a Trinidadian-Venezuelan musician, vocalist, arranger and bandleader who made his career in Britain.

He directed a highly popular Latin American orchestra, had an extensive recording career and owned one of London’s leading nightclubs.

Summers played guitar with The Police until the Sting-fronted band broke up in 1986. He contributing to classics including Roxanne and Walking On the Moon.

Our archive photograph is only captioned “Andy Summers playing in Brighton” so we don’t know at which gig this photograph was taken – can any of our readers help? Were you there?

Olivia Newton John shot to fame playing Sandy across from John Travolta’s Danny Zuko in the classic 1978 musical film Grease.

The film depicts the Rydell High School students’ amorous adventures and launched Australian John’s career as a pop star. She would go on to enjoy hits with Xanadu and Physical.

This photograph is from her visit to Brighton in 1974, prior to her major success in the movie – but where is she standing and where did she play?

Do we have any fans of her early work among our readers?

There is also a photograph of charismatic musician Leo Sayer, from Shoreham, with his trademark mop of curly hair.
