A 94-year-old woman who had £600 stolen from her while she was shopping said she has a huge smile on her face after Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood offered his support.

Daisy Payne was presented with a cheque for £400 from the TV baking star yesterday.

It adds to more than £1,000 raised by neighbours and traders who rallied around her after her purse was taken from her bag while she was shopping in The Broadway, Whitehawk Road, Brighton, on April 6.

The collection was set up by gift shop owner Hayley Hobdell but she had no idea it would attract celebrity attention.

My Hollywood, 51, who lives in Kent, was enraged when he heard of her plight which had been exclusively reported by The Argus last week leading to coverage by other media.

His spokeswoman said: “Paul was saddened to read Daisy’s story and admired her courage.”

Mrs Hobdell said: “He has been very genuine and kind.

“His heart has obviously been touched by Daisy like the rest of us here.

“For someone who is so famous to get involved that is just incredibly - it shows he is a normal person like the rest of us.”

The incident has led to huge amounts of publicity and support for Mrs Payne.

Mrs Hobdell said: “She has coped with it all brilliantly and she has thoroughly enjoyed every second.

“It has really cheered her up since the incident, she has been treated like royalty, she hasn’t stopped laughing.

“It has been the best tonic for her and means that now the theft is not going to stop her going out and about.”

Mrs Payne said: “I have a big smile on my face. Everyone has been so kind. I’m completely overwhelmed. I can’t believe it, I am honestly so grateful.

“When I see Paul Hollywood on the TV now I will think of how he helped me.”

Traders, bus drivers, neighbours and even complete strangers have donated to the collection. The money will help Mrs Payne pay off household bills she was due to settle with the cash stolen. The remainder will allow her to buy a new carpet for her home in Manor Gardens.
