HUNDREDS of historic Argus photographs were unveiled yesterday at an exhibition displaying the paper’s coverage of events between 1929 and 1992.

The Argus Photo Archive 1929-1992 Sale and Exhibition was held at The Grand, Brighton, where keen visitors were examined some of the archive’s gems.

More than 30,000 images will soon be made available on our website after being carefully archived by Andy Garth and his team at Brighton and Hove Stuff, as well as archivists at The Keep.

Mr Garth said: “The turnout shows the level of interest in our local history and that there is still interest in times gone by. It was hard work putting it together and a lot of research was needed to be able to caption the photographs.

“This collection really shows our heritage in an impressive and accessible way.”

Historical items relating to The Argus over its 137 years of providing news and views were on show and visitors could log on to computers and search for events, places and people, or purchase images.

Denise Taylor, from Brighton, the daughter of a former chief photographer Dennis Wixey at The Argus, said: “My father was at The Argus for 35 years.

“It was just our whole lives. We used to go down to the old presses in North Road and it was just such a treat to see him work when I was younger.

“We used to go into the picture editing room with all the old equipment and I would watch him prepare the images to be printed the next day.

“It is great that someone has taken it upon themselves to put this archive together and I know my father would definitely approve.”

The Grand donated a room to be used for the event and there was a selection of cocktails inspired by the archive.

The launch event was also held to raise money for local children’s charity Rockinghorse and The Argus Appeal.
