MORE passengers will get access to live updates on the progress of their bus thanks to a £200,000 investment.

Brighton and Hove City Council has invested the six figure sum into electronic real-time signs at 18 locations.

The new signs will be placed around the city including Mile Oak shops, Portland Road, North Road, Whitehawk Road, Marine Gate and Valley Drive with additional signs also installed at Churchill Square and Old Steine.

Funding for the signs has come from property developer contributions for planning applications. The new signs are hoped to be working by the end of August and will bring the number citywide up to 180.

Parking restrictions at many bus stops will also be beefed up to stop drivers blocking access to passengers with mobility problems.

Clearway markings are proposed for 11 bus stops meaning drivers pulling up in a bus stop will face a £70 fine.

Transport committee chairwoman Gill Mitchell said: “Uncertainty over when your bus might arrive is one thing that can deter people from bus travel so we’re working hard to overcome this obstacle and give passengers more certainty.”
