ARTISTS have the chance to create a £30,000 piece of public art for the University of Brighton.

The university is working with the Brighton Digital Festival and Brighton and Hove City Council to commission the design for the Huxley Building on the Moulsecoomb campus.

The work will be displayed in the foyer of the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences which teaches pharmacy, chemistry, biology, biomedical science and ecology.

In this building degree students have lectures and scientists research diseases.

They look at causes, new and improved ways to treat them, as well as how people age, novel methods to remediate environmental damage, the effects of pollution on sea life and how mammals live in urban areas.

The university urged applicants to consider the university’s mission statement, the function of the building and the need to attract interest from the public in their submission.

A committee tasked with picking the winning design will welcome work which reflects art, humanities and science. Those which feature digital themes also will be praised.

The commission is open to professional artists who have £2 million public liability insurance.

Applicants who have successfully made it through to a shortlist will be notified on June 15.

They will then be given a £1,000 fee to develop a concept. These proposals will be exhibited at the British Science Festival which is being hosted by both Brighton and Sussex universities in September.

The winning design will be revealed that month with the work is expected to be installed within six months, to be open by July 2018.

The successful artist will oversee the creation and installation of the commission and work with the site manager.

Applicants will have to provide a detailed budget, demonstrate the materials are fit for purpose, provide a maintenance plan, risk assessments, be available to promote the work and to speak to the press.

This public art commission is being funded by section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. The £30,000 budget includes the costs of any materials, artist’s fees, design development, artist’s insurance, supply and installation, signage, travel, and any other costs incurred in the production of the project.

The deadline for submissions is noon on May 29. Email submissions to melissa@brightondigitalfestival.co.uk with `Huxley commission proposal’ as the subject. For information, contact Alan Boldon at a.boldon@brighton.ac.uk or David Heightley on d.heightley@brighton.ac.uk
