FORTY six new homes are to be built by Worthing Borough Council.

The authority is funding the £10 million project for the homes in Durrington by spring 2018.

Adur and Worthing Councils have made the first of two £5 million payments to Worthing Homes Housing Association, which will build the affordable homes with Persimmons.

Just over £5 million has been invested in the first of the new homes, which will be mainly two and three bedroom houses for affordable rent and shared ownership.

A further ten one and two bedroom flats will be built on the former MGM site in Heene Road.

Executive member for customer services Heather Mercer said: “Worthing Borough Council is one of a few local authorities in the UK to support a private housing association in this way.

“The council and Worthing Homes enjoy a very effective relationship and together we are taking direct action to help provide more affordable housing in our town.

“We look forward to welcoming new tenants into these homes as soon as spring 2018.

“The council will continue in its commitment to provide more quality housing stock in the district.”
