A WALKWAY at an award-winning park will have to be replaced following an attack by vandals.

The bridge at Preston Rock Garden in Brighton was targeted on three separate occasions in August.

Following a survey, it has now been agreed that the entire bridge in the garden is to be replaced.

Residents are being asked on the rock garden’s Facebook page for their opinion on how the bridge should be finished once the replacement is in place.

The current choice is to paint the bridge a slightly dulled down red with black trim to give the structure a Japanese/Chinese theme as well as hopefully bringing good fortunes as red is considered good luck in Asian societies.

The rockery was landscaped by Captain B Maclaren in 1935 and is the largest municipal rock garden in the UK.

In its two acres, there are 400 tree whips and 25,000 English bluebells providing a haven for insects and birds.

In December the park, cared for by Brighton and Hove City Council staff and volunteers, was named the best in England in a public vote.
