TABLE tennis players will take to the sky for a special match on the i360.

Members of Brighton Table Tennis Club will play an exhibition match on the 5pm flight tomorrow.

Two tables will be placed in the pod of the seafront attraction and members will play a game of round the table throughout the 25-minute flight.

Former Brighton and Hove mayor Councillor Pete West will be there along with three-times UK-Chinese Champion and club coach Wen Wei Xu.

Tim Holtam, club co-founder and director, said: “We are very grateful to the i360 for supporting this community initiative. The players taking part will include local young people, some of them with learning difficulties, young refugees and young people from the travelling community.

“They are all excited about playing and having a flight on the i360.”

The idea came from 11-year-old club member Mason Tangmar and is being held to attract more players from all walks of life to the group.

The club runs training sessions for everyone from cancer patients, Afghan war refugees, pensioners, schoolchildren and youngsters with learning difficulties to plain enthusiasts.

Last year the club became the first Brighton “Club of Sanctuary” a distinction awarded by the City of Sanctuary Network for welcoming refugees and asylum seekers and providing a safe haven.

An i360 spokesman said: “We greatly admire the work of Brighton Table Tennis Club and we share mutual ambitions about inspiring young people to aim high.

“When we heard Mason’s fantastic idea of playing table tennis 450ft above Brighton we were delighted to help make his dream come true.”

The club was founded in February 2007 by Tim Holtam and Harry McCarney, two ex-international table tennis players.

They wanted to share their enthusiasm for the sport with amateurs and disadvantaged young people throughout the city.

They started with two broken tables and over ten years it has grown into an umbrella organisation hosting 100 tables across Brighton.

The club was voted Brighton and Hove City Council’s Sports Club of the Year in 2014 and has also picked up a prestigious national award for table tennis club of the year.

Its disability programme was founded in December 2013 and in September 2015, the club moved to its now permanent address, the former site of St John the Baptist Primary School, The Fitzherbert’s Centre in Upper Bedford Street, Brighton.
