RESIDENTS are rejoicing after a developer withdrew its plan to build flats on a pub beer garden.

A proposal by Inn Brighton Properties Ltd to erect a three-storey building containing three two bedroom flats in the beer garden of The Signalman pub in Ditchling Rise, Brighton, have been scrapped after it received more than 200 objections.

The planning application for the flats has now been withdrawn, with developers instead proposing to replace a window at the back of the pub with a door and an external staircase.

Delphine Douglas, 42, a logistics controller, of Springfield Road, said: “While all those involved in the local community are very pleased that the application has been withdrawn we are also aware it is unlikely to be the final application made.

“We believe that, in all likelihood, there will be further proposals once alterations have been made following our objections.

“So we are happy with the initial outcome but watch this space.”

Brighton and Hove City Council has yet to decide on the amended application.

Mary Stevens, from the Ditchling Rise Area Residents’ Association, said: “This is great news welcomed by everyone in the area, especially near neighbours of the pub.

“We’re still concerned though that the application for steps from the rear of the pub to the yard still stands, and suspect the intention might still be to move the garden to this space, which would have huge noise, light and overlooking impacts on neighbours and ruin the vibe of the pub.”

Inn Brighton Properties Ltd was not available to comment on the withdrawal of its plans.
