ARMED police were deployed after a man was seen waving knives around in a hotel car park. 

Police were called to at 10.35am today to a hotel car park in Wykeham Road, Worthing, where a man wielding knives was behaving in a threatening manner. 

The man made off and armed and unarmed officers were deployed to the area to search for the man. 

Police received a number of further calls from the public reporting a man in possession of a knife and acting strangely, with sightings of the suspect in Victoria Road and Heene Road. 

The man was eventually found at 11.30am in Lanfranc Road. 

A holdall being carried by the man was found to contain various weapons, including knives.

Chief Inspector Miles Ockwell, of Sussex Police, said: "There is no suggestion that this incident was related to terrorism.

"One member of the public received a small cut to the hand. No officers were injured and the man was safely detained by unarmed officers.

"I want to reassure the public that this appears to be an isolated incident where the man was acting alone and to thank the public for their assistance in this matter. Some drugs and a quantity of knives have been recovered."

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and possession of class A drugs and remains in police custody.
