PAUL Metcalfe was involved with the RNLI at Eastbourne for more than 30 years until he had to retired at the age of 70 last year.

He has been made an MBE for his services to the RNLI.

He said: “This is in honour of my family and all the things they have had to put up with over the years due to my RNLI involvement.

“I’ve missed birthday parties, dinner parties, school parties and even the birth of my son.

“It was a total shock but I also feel really honoured and proud.”

Despite no longer actively working with the RNLI crews, Mr Metcalf still fundraises for the charity.

He is also an Eastbourne borough councillor, a school governor, a member of parish church council and is involved with the sea cadets and Scouts but says he is happy being busy.

Mr Metcalfe said: “I like being part of the community and I enjoy being involved with things.”
