New skipper Ben Brown believes Sussex have the firepower to get through the first selection poser of his tenure.

The 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman is in charge for the rest of the County Championship season.

Sussex are preparing for a division two day-nighter against Gloucestershire from Monday as pink-ball cricket comes to Hove.

They have lost the services of strike bowler Vernon Philander while George Garton, who looked the most likely seamer to take his place, will be on duty with England Lions as they play South Africa.

But Chris Jordan is expected back from T20 duty with England.

Brown said: “It was a massive benefit that some of the boys played against South Africa A at Arundel recently so we have two or three knocking on the door.

“We have second team players who have a performance under their belts so we could have a selection headache.”

Both Sussex and Gloucestershire will train with the pink ball under lights at Hove over the weekend.

It is an auspicious occasion for Brown, recovered from a hand injury, to take over the reins in succession to Luke Wright and stand-in Chris Nash.

Head coach Mark Davis said: “Ben has been a popular member of the Sussex family for many years and we’re sure this is a challenge he will absolutely relish.

“I’d also like to say a big thank-you to Chris Nash who led us to victories in his two games in charge against Worcestershire and Leicestershire.

“I’m looking forward to Nashy making a big contribution in the rest of the season as a senior player and a key batsman in the side.”

Ross Taylor will lead Sharks in this year’s NatWest T20 Blast.
