A RADIO presenter is opening a new community cafe which he says will serve the “best breakfast in Brighton”.

Juice FM’s Tony Marks bought the property in Egremont Place, Hanover, and named it Starfish and Coffee, after his favourite Prince song.

A short Facebook post on the Hanover Community Notice Board alerting locals to the new cafe has already attracted widespread support, with more than 550 comments and 700 likes.

Mr Marks, 42, from Hanover, said: “For the last year or so now I have wanted to do something a bit different that belonged to me.

“When I saw the building available near my house it really caught my eye and inspired me to take up the challenge.

“I know there is a really strong community spirit in Hanover and there is definitely a gap in the market for a cafe like this.

“There will be a strong influence of my musical tastes in the cafe itself and we are aiming to serve the best breakfast in Brighton, with high quality products and using organic produce as much as we possibly can.

“It has been hard work refurbishing the inside of the building and I have had great support from locals, with some being involved in bringing the building back to life.

“There is still a lot to do but I am aiming to open the cafe on July 12, as long as all goes to plan.”

After spending nearly ten years entertaining listeners with his radio show, Mr Marks decided to use his college training as a chef and experience working in front-of-house management at The Savoy in London to re-enter the catering industry.

He will continue to host his show two nights a week, spending the rest of his time running the cafe.

Mr Marks added: “You really have to consider what the locals want from the business and I am aware that past owners of the building have struggled to make it work.

“It will most definitely be a family and dog friendly environment and we will be serving traditional full English breakfasts, as well as a high end brunch menu made with fresh local ingredients.

“I am in the process of finding good quality coffee to serve.

“I can’t wait to meet more people in the community and for them to come together to enjoy good food and music, my two biggest passions.”
