Chris Nash has been ruled out for Sussex after a training night accident.

The opener suffered concussion when he was struck on the head by a ball as the county practised for their current pink-ball Championship tussle against Gloucestershire.

Nash will be closely monitored for the coming week and should return when Leicestershire visit Arundel from next Wednesday.

The county did extra work under lights at Hove on Saturday evening in preparation for the current day-nighter, which is when Nash was hurt.

His deputy Delray Rawlins fell to the new ball, as did Harry Finch, as Sussex made a wobbly start to the division two contest.

Gloucestershire dismissed Sussex’s top three as the hosts reached 86-3 at lunch.

Rawlins touched Liam Norwell’s away-swinger to wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick and David Payne had Finch well held at second slip off David Payne for 11 playing away from his body.

Luke Wells and Stiaan van Zyl put on 43 in eight overs to wrest back the initiative but off-spinner Jack Taylor struck just before the break when Wells, whose 35 included seven fours, was caught at slip by George Hankins after Roderick had initially parried the ball when Wells tried to cut a delivery too close to him.

Luke Wright struck Taylor for six off his first ball and he was 13 at the break with van Zyl 15 not out.

Although there was little evidence of the pink ball swinging or seaming more than the red one, there was some good bounce and carry in the pitch for the Gloucestershire attack to utilise.
