Luke Wright has thanked wife Rebecca for giving him a lie-in on Hove’s longest day.

Wright fired 118 to help Sussex declared on 358-9 against Gloucestershire as day-night County Championship cricket arrived.

The hosts failed to make a breakthrough in seven floodlit overs before the close, at 9.27pm, but have a platform in pink-ball cricket.

Wright, whose third child Harry was born two weeks ago, said: “It has been all go at our house with having three kids now.

“To be fair to the missus, she gave me a nice lie-in knowing I was playing.

“I probably owe her most of the 100 to be fair to her!”

Wright admits the new ball remains something of an unknown quantity.

He said: “It’s a new challenge to everyone.

“It’s hard to know what is a good score but we are certainly not out of the game.

“There are times when we have played in the nets and the ball has seemed unplayable and others when it has felt pretty flat.

“We are still trying to work it out.”

Opener Chris Nash is not involved in the current match after being hit on the head by a George Garton delivery in a practice session on Saturday night.

It is as yet unclear how long he will be sidelined as the club follow concussion protocols.
