A TEENAGER has been knocked down by a fire engine.

Emergency services were called to the collision involving a pedestrian and a fire engine at the Goring Crossways roundabout in Littlehampton Road, Goring, at 2.10pm.

South East Coast Ambulance Service sent two ambulances and a critical care paramedic in a response car.

The 17-year-old boy from Littlehampton has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, with a serious head injury.

He is in a stable condition and his condition is not life threatening.

The road was closed in both directions for scene investigation work.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service refused to provide any details of which fire station the engine was from or where it was heading to but said it was responding to an emergency call.

A spokeswoman said: "We are naturally concerned about the condition of the pedestrian and for our staff involved."

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said no arrests had been made.

The road was reopened at 5pm.
