AROUND 100 homes were evacuated after police received reports of a suspicious package left outside the gates of an army cadet centre.

Officers placed a 100 metre cordon around the item in Marmion Road, Hove, after they were called at 6pm.

Around 100 homes in the Stoneham Road and surrounding area were evacuated as a precaution.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "Others outside the cordon have been told to stay indoors. No one was in the cadet centre building."

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) have arrived on scene to inspect the package and carried out a controlled explosion.

Residents were then allowed to return to their homes.

Detective Chief Inspector Alasdair Henry, of Sussex Police, said: "We would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding this evening while this incident was dealt with. The cordon was placed around the area as a safety precaution while we waited for the EOD unit to arrive and inspect the package.

"We are now satisfied that this is not a suspicious package and have lifted the cordons and road closures."
