A FAMILY parade service and display of memorabilia were among the highlights of the 1st Hurstpierpoint Girls’ Brigade’s 70th anniversary celebrations on Sunday.
Three of the four captains who led the company during the 70 years were at the Methodist Church, Hurstpierpoint, to help mark the occasion.
Margaret Taylor, who has been the captain since 1987, said: “There was an amazing atmosphere in the service as many people shared their experiences of being part of the Girls’ Life Brigade or Girls’ Brigade and continued enjoying their reminiscing over lunch.”
The first captain, Ruth Clark, served from 1947 to 1964. She died last year but her sister, Jenny Hollingdale, also a founder member of the company, was at Sunday’s event. The minister leading the service, Rev Gina Upton, was the second captain and Daphne Cooper the third.
