THE family of a pensioner convicted of sexually abusing a three-year-old claim he has been the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

Retired mechanic John Manvell, 69, was jailed for seven years in 2014 after being found guilty by a jury of sexually assaulting the girl at his home in Steyning as well inciting her to engage in sexual activity.

Manvell, previously of Mill Road, Steyning, has tried and failed to appeal against his sentence.

Now his daughter Clare Ralston has launched a petition calling on the Criminal Cases Review Commission to look at his case.

In the petition, Ms Ralston complained his conviction had been unfair as there had been “no medical evidence” to prove the assault and the young victim “was not allowed to be vigorously cross examined” because of her age.

At the time of his conviction Det ective Constable Dani Flude praised the little girl’s bravery in giving evidence in court.

Judge Shani Barnes, who sentenced Manvell, said he had shown no remorse and posed a serious risk to children.

Ms Ralston said: "During his imprisonment he has suffered two brain tumours.

“These have left him with a speech impediment and a balance problem.

“His family have a five-hour car journey from Steyning to visit him and are only allowed three visits per month.

“The visits only last for one hour.

“The entire family have suffered immensely as a result of these allegations.

“His family are receiving treatment for stress, anxiety and depression along with other health problems.

“His grandchildren are receiving counselling to help them come to terms with the fact their grandfather has been so unfairly removed from their lives.”

More than 250 people have signed the petition and voiced their support for Manvell, who comes from a “very old and respected Steyning family” and had lived in the town all his life.

Many members of the community expressed shock at his conviction and support for the petition.

John’s wife Margaret said: “It’s been very hard on us all but we will not give up.

“John needs to be at home with us.”

Ms Ralston is also asking supporters to write to MP Nick Herbert to ask him to look at her father’s case
