A STUDENT has told of the horror of being caught up in an earthquake on the island of Kos.

University of Brighton student Naomi Ruddock, 22, from Old Steine, and her mother Eleanor said they woke to their room shaking and immediately grabbed their phones and ran outside.

The earthquake struck the Greek island popular with British tourists at 1.31am local time.

The pair, who are staying at the Akti Palace resort in Kardamena, told of their shock.

Speaking to The Argus, Miss Ruddock said: “We both got woken up by this massive jolt and we looked it each other and the room was moving.

“The room was really rumbling. It felt like our bed was on water because we were being knocked from side to side.

“So we just grabbed our stuff and ran out of our rooms.”

She and her mother stood outside with fellow tourists after the quake hit, some of whom slept outside, before going back into their rooms where they were experienced aftershocks every 20 minutes.

Their hotel is around a 30 minute drive from Kos Town, which experienced the brunt of the damage.

Two people died in Kos according to officials, after being crushed by debris from a collapsed wall.

At least 100 other people were injured, due to the 6.7-magnitude quake that hit seven miles north east of the island, near the Turkish coast.

Mrs Ruddock, who works in events and PR, had gone on holiday for a break following a sudden death in the family.

She said fellow holidaymakers who were staying in rooms on higher floors told her objects were flying off the shelves when the quake hit.

Miss Ruddock added: “We were really lucky, our hotel was not damaged.

“In town people couldn’t return to their hotels, buildings were completely damaged there and two people have died.

“It feels so surreal and confusing."

But the international event management student plans to stay on the island to enjoy the rest out the rest of their holiday.

Her father William died of an aneurysm last year, and the pair booked the holiday for a break after what they said had been a difficult few months.

The pair will be flying home on Wednesday before she enjoys her graduation ceremony in Brighton on Friday.
