THOUSANDS of people attended the first ever Eastbourne Pride on Saturday afternoon.

The rain failed to deter supporters - both families and members of the LGBT community across the south east.

The event was opened by celebrity LGBT campaigner Peter Tatchell.

He said: “Eastbourne Pride exceeded all expectations.

“The public response to the parade on the seafront was enthusiastic and supportive.

“The numbers attending were high for a first Pride in a small metropolis.

“I expect it will grow and become a major fixture in the Eastbourne calendar; attracting visitors from all over the south east and boosting the local economy.

“The message of Pride was to celebrate the contribution that LGBT people make to the Eastbourne community and to press for better local support.

“Many Eastbourne schools do not do enough to educate pupils about LGBT acceptance and to combat homophobic bullying. LGBT issues are often not discussed in sex and relationship lessons.

“Education is the key to combatting prejudice, discrimination and hate crime.

“The local authorities need to do more.”
