BRIGHTON and Hove’s latest craft beer brewer has launched.

Lost Pier Brewing is producing five beers which will be sold in shops and bars in the city.

Toby Peirce, who founded Brighton-based fine wine merchant Quaff, is behind Lost Pier having been involved in the burgeoning craft beer trade for a number of years.

Mr Peirce decided to harness local talent for the project and brought in artist Mister Phil to design the eye-catching can wraps.

Local brewer Dan Gale, who is also a qualified winemaker from Plumpton Agricultural College, is also involved.

The team have already been brewing for a while and for much of this year they have been selling brews on draught.

Customers at the Quaff shops – in Portland Road, Hove and Fiveways, Brighton – have been invited to taste the beers and offer feedback as well as cast their votes for a say in the final label name.

Mr Peirce said: “Lost Pier was born out of this process, its name a respectfully nostalgic nod to the iconic West Pier, felled by an arsonist’s fire.

“Its skeletal remains, 14 years later, are still fighting a slow but ultimately losing battle with the elements.

“So far, three beers have been chosen for canning, with others used as guest beers on draught.”

The first can, Lost Pier Beach Session IPA, was launched last week and will be available in the two Quaff shops.

The session-strength IPA is described by Mr Peirce as crisp with an assertively dry bite and a fruity finish.

Also launched last week was the West Side IPA which comes in at 6.1 per cent.

A traditional American IPA finishes “dry with a high, rich bitterness” he said. “Simcoe and Cascade hops give notes of grapefruit and citrus.”

The third beer launched last week is called Full of Fruit Pale at 4.6 per cent.

He said: “It’s a very smooth, fruity pale ale including all sorts of summertime flavours; mango, apple, vanilla, with a creamy body provided by the 25 per cent flaked oats, wheat, oat milk and malto-dextrin.”

The five per cent APA will be launched on Wednesday.

The American Pale Ale boasts “a rye malt, packing nuttiness and a dry, grainy finish,” he said.

Also launching on Wednesday is the 5.8 per cent Miami Weiss.

He said: “It is a classic German Weiss with a dose of US Summit and Sorachi hops, coriander and orange zest for big flavour notes.”
