Atletico Madrid are ready to step up their pre-season programme as they close in on the Amex.

The Spanish outfit are in Munich for the Audi Cup in which they face Napoli today (4.45pm BST).

After a final or third-place play-off versus Liverpool or Bayern, they will head to England to play Albion on Sunday.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone has taken 29 players to Germany including five emerging youngsters.

The party includes stars such as Antoine Griezmann, Fernando Torres, Koke and goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

While still looking to rotate, Simeone is expected to field as close as possible to a first-choice XI at some stage in Germany.

With three tough friendlies, this is being seen in Spain as the most significant week of Atleti’s pre-season.

Simeone said: “We are at an intermediate stage of our preparation for the new season.

“The Napoli game will be important because it will show us where we are.”

It remains unclear whether Saul Niguez, one of the stars of the European Championships for under-21s this summer, will join the group in time for the Albion match.

Saul has recently rejoined the squad for training after a delayed holiday and has stayed back in Madrid for now along with striker Kevin Gameiro, who is recovering from injury.
