CAST members of hit US television series Orange Is The New Black have sent a video message to Brighton Pride attendees.

The show, which is set in a minimum-security prison, has won plaudits for its depiction of sexuality as well as race, gender and body types.

The video features actors Danielle Brooks, who plays Tasha Jefferson, Uzo Adbua (Crazy Eyes) and Laverne Cox (Sophia Burset) wishing goodwill to the thousands who will take part in Brighton Pride this weekend using points of local reference.

Between them, the actors say: “Happy Pride and Trans Pride Brighton.

“If you’re going to Preston Park to meet a couple of West End Girls care of the Pet Shop Boys, sticking around in Kemp Town for a street party, spending the day on the beach with fish, chips and seagulls or just rolling into town in time for the clubs to open, have a loud, proud and out there Pride.”

They add: “Party hard and party safe and remember to pour one out for Poussey” – a reference to main character Poussey Washington who died in season four of the show.

Orange Is The New Black was praised by the Baltimore Sun as having the “most nuanced, thorough portrayals of queer women on television. From the outset, same-sex female relationships are accepted as a given”.

The show is based on a memoir by Piper Kerman.
