Chris Hughton said Albion got exactly what they wanted from their final pre-season run-out.

The Seagulls twice came from behind before losing to a late strike against Atletico Madrid.

They had to a lot of defending against a Yannick Carrasco inspired Atleti side in the first half.

But they improved as an attacking force in the second and were rewarded by goals from Pascal Gross and Steve Sidwell in a 3-2 defeat.

The Seagulls boss said: “It was a really good game for us, certainly going into our first game against Manchester City. We couldn’t have had a more similar test.

“I’m really pleased Atletico Madrid agreed to come.

“I’d like to think they got some good value from coming as well.

“Overall I was happy with what I saw but what Atletico showed was the quality they have got on the ball right throughout the pitch.

“We experienced a lot. We had to defend very well and use our shape very well at times. And I was delighted to get the two goals.”

Hughton said a kick on the knee suffered by Solly March was probably nothing to worry about and will check on Beram Kayal, who suffered a sore ankle.

He was also pleased to see Anthony Knockaert enjoy playing time after recovering from an ankle injury.
