Around 200 people were evacuated after lightning struck a pier.

The incident happened during heavy storms in Hastings last night which lasted for more than two hours.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service control room received more than 70 calls between 8.30pm and 11pm and had to bring in crews from across the county to help.

Most of the calls were to deal with flooding in homes and on streets as drains became blocked and unable to cope but there were also lightning strikes on Hastings Pier and other properties in the area.

A brigade spokesman said: "There was no major incident or serious damage done but there was property damage in some areas.

"The most common calls were for flooding."

The storm struck without much warning one minute we were concentrating on the numbers the next the sky went Black & everything was quiet then the lightening & thunder. Right in the middle of the big link game we were hit by lightening, a very loud bang & there was this noise of air & water going round & round under & above the pier, like it was in a mixer swirling around & around, Several people screamed & some of the lights went out it was really scary, The rain made a thunderous noise, Water was pouring from the ceiling & the lobby was badly flooded. But i am pleased to say the pier stood up to the battering. The staff were fantastic & most of us felt quite safe. in all It lasted for no longer than 20 minutes. We finished the Bingo session & then left.
