HUNDREDS of speed demons will roar through the city in a historic quarter-mile sprint.

The much-loved Brighton Speed Trials return to Madeira Drive next month with more than 150 cars and 75 motorbikes taking part in the event.

The line-up has just been announced and includes a wide range of vehicles, from classics to ultra-modern.

Spectators will be keeping an eye out for a 1930 Rolls Royce Phantom 2 Handlye Special with an incredible 27 litre Rolls Royce Merlin engine from a spitfire.

Other star attractions include an iconic Aston Martin DB2 1950 team car, supercars a McLaren 650 Spyder and a McLaren SLR, an all-electric Tesla saloon, and crowd favourite favourite a Ferrari 550 Maranello.

Len Wooller of the Brighton and Hove Motor Club said: “We have a terrific line-up for this year’s speed trials.

“It will be an action-packed day out for all the family.

“The line-up includes some stunning classic cars and bikes as well as some of the most modern racing engine technology.

“It will be a great opportunity to see old and new vehicles competing against each other for the fastest time in their class.”

The speed trial, which was first held in 1905, is one of the oldest motorsport events in the UK.

Up for grabs are a number of awards and cash prizes for drivers who get the best time of the day in their vehicle’s class.

The event is organised by Brighton and Hove Motor club which has existed since 1932 and also organises The Goodwood Sprint and The Concours and Classic Car Show.

The club has more than 300 members and is one of the largest of its kind in the country.

This year’s trial, on Saturday, September 2, comes only two years after its triumphant return following the tragic death of sidecar passenger Charlotte Tagg in 2012.

The first engines will be revving from around 8.45am, with the first timed runs beginning at 11.30am.

Spectators wanting to get close enough to smell the petrol and engine oil in the race paddock can buy tickets online for £12 or £15.

Entry is free for children under 14.
